A : Yes, he was. It is hard to as-
certain just how much lie gave
away before his death in 1969,
but he still left an estate valued-
at something near half a million
dollars. His vast library (along
with his personal papers) was val-
ued conservatively as being worth
$42,124, including a start on a
-book he was writing on Commu-
nist subversion.
