attention to a new book entitled. The La at of the Giants .(New y- oxk: The
Macmillan Company, 1970) by Cyrus L, Sulzberger of The New YoTlc
Times. This is the secoaid volun to of his diary. The first volume,

Preface he states there will be a thirdel volume at an undetermined
future date.
The first 87 pages of the book are more memoirs than

diary, a large portion of which is devoted to his Coll Vol. sa.tions with
de Gaulle, The diary picks up in September 1954 when: the last
volume loft off and carries through December 1963. As the book is
over. 1000 pages long and covers a multitude of subjects, conversations
and personal recollections, it is. naturally very difficult to review. I

have therefore merely abstracted, as an attache-rent to this
the many comments on CIA which appear in this book.
3. Sulzberger evidently had mixed emotions about Allen Dulles.
He notes, at page 5, that some two years before it happened MT. Dulles
had told him, "The Russians are too smart to put bases in Cuba, " (The
full text. of this particular interview with Mx. Dulles appears at ppa 678-.
79.) At another.point, Sulzberger states that he felt remarks by Mr. .
Dulles at a dinner party were "indiscreet," (p.. 494) In a post-election
interview with President-elect Kennedy, he quotes the latter as saying
he planned to keep Allen Dulles on "for a while" but then replace him,.
hopefully with General Maxwell Taylor. (p. 693)
4, The Chapter entitled Naoscr: My Intelligence Service
Would Be Angry with Me" commences at page 457 and details Sulzberger's
lengthy interview with Nasser on 22 March 1958. The title of the Chapter
