CPYRGHT '
On the same day that the official Communist Party
ewspaper in East Germany was attacking James%J3ond,
e fictional secret agent, as a fascist, the appointnment
of a new director of the Central Intelligence Agency
as announced by President Johnson.
Bond, of course, is only a skulker in the ranks
gainst the forces of evil represented P y the interna-
? ional Communist conspiracy and, thee global criminal
lement.
On the other hand,.Vice Admiral William F. Ra-
orn, Jr., who-succeeds John A. McCone :as ' head of the
IA, holds a rank similar to that,of "M,". Bond's pipe-
uffing boss.
There is, of course, only a passing resemblarYCe
etween Bond's adventures and those"Of the real-life
gents and their bosses on both sides of the Iron Curtain:
Men like "M" and Admiral Raborn, who was chiefly
espo4sible for the development of the Polaris. missile,
re scientific types who are more likely to be at home
nalyzing figures than-like Bond-eyeing them.
