The Capture of the CIA in the Act in France has become the Subject
of the Day (from the Yeni Gazete of Istanbul, 19 Aug 65)
CPYRGHT
One month earlier considerable reaction was caused in France after an
American reconnaissance plane flew over atomic installations in France and
took photographs. However, while asserting.on one hand that the matter is
closed, French officials on the other hand added that the American Central'
Intelligence Agency had been active for a long time in France and that the
incident involving the Pierrelatte atomic installations was neither the first
espionage incident, nor would it be the last one.
By now the incident has been completely brought into the light, and
the Americans agreed that they were guilty of "benevolent espionage". Al-
though French officials were disturbed by this situation, they were proud
to see the extent of the espionage which had been carried out.
The Pierrlatte incident is in no way something new. The Americans
have frequently altered the courses of their planes flying over France, have
flown over Pierrelatte and photographed the atomic installations there. The
French were aware of this, too. However, the French Secret Service was
anxious to catch the Americans red handed. Finally, on 16 July an American
plane was ordered to fly even lower to photograph the Pierrelatte installations.
