i, That's how he put himself through medical school.
Q. is it true that former CIA chief WILLIAM E.
RABORN JR. once .arrived in Portland and. announced t6
friends that it "was nice to be in Seattle again?" -
Wendy Sutherland, Portland
A. Raborn, who reportedly visited Portland when he
was head of Aerojet Corporation, was a notoriously poor
i student of geography and used to drive hlis CIA staff to
despair by interrupting high level briefirgs to ask pene-
i trating questions such as, "where is Sino?" Whether he
also confused Portland with Seattle is a story we can't
confirm or deny. ,
Q. How did JACQUES SINGER, conductor of the
Oregon Symphony, get his beautifi-1 accent? - T.R.,
Portland
A. This is something of a puzzler, since he came to
the United States from Poland when he was only a year
old. However, an-accent gives an artist mystique, and
Jacques seems to enjoy it.
Q. I understand that CLYDE DeBERRY, Oregon's
leader of the Congress of Racial Equality and a black
power advocate, now claims that he is not a Negro: -
M.A., Portland
A. DeBerry says he quit being a "Negro" two years
ago and that now he considers himself a "black man."
DeBerry and other black power adherents believe the
word, "Negro" represents a concept formed in days,-
of-slavery, so they disdain being called by that word.
