official said yesterday the United
States has made clear that if
the South .Viet Nam war
worsens the possibility of
military action against North
Viet Nam has .not been
excluded.
Assistant Secretary of State
William P. Bundy told the
French Broadcasting Corp., "If
it should turn out that it is not
possible to deal with the
inswgency without stronger
measures, we have -made it
clear that we have not excluded
the possibility of action against
North Viet Nam; iteslf."
Mr. Bundy in response to
questions, said the United
States doubts if it would be;
useful to introduce Americana
combat units into South Viet
Nam or to take. o~~er command
of the military operations there.
"But the conflict must be wan
by the -South Viet Namese
themselves," he said.
Asked if the United States
would be ready to use drastic
measures-a reference to
nuclear weapons-against North
Viet Nam or Communist China, ;
Mr. 'Bundy -said this question
has been studied carefully, but
"I do not think it is appropriate
to discuss the measures that`
might be employed in a case
that has not yet arisen."
"We do not believe that Hanoi'
and Peking can be persuaded to
leave their neighbors alone
unless they are convinced that
they will run into unacceptable
pressures and military conflict
>f they continue to pursue their
present ambitions," Mr. Bundy
said.
