RUDOLF IVANOVICH ABEL. HE IS THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR THE U.S. SENATE SEAT HELD BY NEW YORK REPUBLICAN SEN, JACOB K. JAVITS, AND THIS CREATED A HIGHLY UNUSUAL SITUATION. PERHAPS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF POLITICS, A SENATOR HAS HAD TO BE BRIEFED BY THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY ON THE DOINGS OF HIS OPPONENT. WHILE JAVITS SHOOK HANDS WITH VOTERS ON THE SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK, DONOVAN SHOOK HANDS WITH CUBAN PREMIER FIDEL CASTRO AND NEGOTIATED WITH HIM ON THE RETURN OF 1,113 PRISONERS CAPTURED DURING THE ABORTIVE BAY OF PIGS INVASION. THE "A ,,KEPT JAVITS BRIEFED ON DONOVAN'S NEGOTIATIONS WITH CASTRO. SILVER HAIRED LAWYER. DONOVAN SERVED DURING WORLD WAR II ON THE PERSONAL STAFF OF MAJ. GEN. WILLIAM J. DONOVAN (NO RELATION) THEN DIRECTOR OF THE TOP SECRET OFFICE OF STRATEGIC SERVICES. DONOVAN HAD ANOTHER ENCOUNTER WITH INTRIGUE WHEN HE DEFENDED ABEL IN COURT WHEN THE RUSSIAN COLONEL WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH ESPIONAGE. DEFENDING ABEL WAS NOT A PLEASANT JOB. DONOVAN AND HIS FAMILY SUFFERED SUBTLE AND OPEN VILIFICATION DURING THE TRIAL. ABEL WAS CONVICTED IN 1958 AND SENT TO PRISON FOR 30 YEARS. DONOVAN DONATED HIS $10,000 FEE TO THREE LAW SCHOOLS. DONOVAN EARNS HIS LIVING AS A PARTNER IN THE WALL STREET REA FIRM OF WATTERS AND DONOVAN, HE WAS BORN IN NEW YORK CITY ON FEB. 29, 1916, AND WAS GRADUATED ROM ALL HALLOWS INSTITUTE. FORDHAM COLLEGE AND THE HARVARD LAW CHOOL. HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH MCKENNA A BROOKLYN GIRL. IN 1941. HEY HAVE FOUR CHILDREN.
