ills A. Uinnaons, 79, who
became a Central Intelligence
Agency official after 40 years in
research with the U.S. Rubber
Co., died Sunday of a heart
attack at his home, 5240 Lough-
boro Road NW.
He had come here to work
for the Office of Defense Mobili-
zation in 1951, and was a senior.
official of the CIA from 1952
until his retirement in 1959. He
received the Distinguished In-
telligence Medal for his work.
A researcher and executive at
the rubber company in New
York from 1912 until 1952, Mr.
Gibbons was a pioneer in the'
field of rubber technology.
He held more than 60 patents,
including one for a rubber
vulcanization test and several
for the manufacture of rubber
products directly from latex. .
r e was airector of research
and development from 1928 until :
1946, when he relinquished his
administrative duties to devote
himself to research.
His government service also.
included work on a Reconstruc
tion Finance Corporation tech-
nical committee and on a U.S.:
mission which studied synthetic
ruber production in the Soviet
Union.
Mr. Gibbons leaves his wife,
Stella; two daughters, Miss Vir-'
ginia Gibbons of the Loughboro
.Road address, and Mrs. Dorothy:
Cooke of 4528 Macomb St. NW,
and a granddaughter.
Services were to be yesterday
at Gawler's Funeral Home, Wis-:
consin Avenue and Harrison
Street NW, with burial in Oak
Hill Cemetery.
