Approved For Release 1999/09/07 : CIA-RDP75-00001 R000200130009-3 PAUL V. HOWL RTON Paul W. Howerton was born in 1916 An Valparaiso, Indiana. He was educated at Indiana University, University of Calcutta (India), and Northwestern University. He was graduated with honors in chemistry, mathematics, and languages from the latter university. From 1935 to 1942,, he worked as a chemist at the Whiting, In- diana laboratories of Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corporation. From 1942 to -945 he served in the US Air Force a Supervisor of Oxygen Production, Northern At. Service Area Command, Air Tecllpical Service Command, China-Burma-India Theater. 4fter the war he returned to Carbide until 1949 when he moved Lo Deaver, Colorado to take over responsibilities as head of the development division of the research department of Julius Byman and Company. In 1950 Mr. Howerton organized Hownian Research Associates, Inc., and served as its first president. He Joined CIA as a member of the Chemicals Branch, ORR, in August 1951. Mr. Howerton has over 300 publications including patents, translations, papers on chemical literature, and abstracts of chemical articles from eleven languages. He is facile in most of the Slavic, Teutonic, and Latin languages as well as Hindi. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advance4t of.Science, and the New York Academy of Sciences as well as being a Fellow of the Chemical Society (London), Membre ordinaire de la Societe Suisse de Chimie, and the Netherlands Chemical Society. He has been a professorial lec- turer in Russian, German, French, Italian, and Spanish as well as in chemistry and physics at Indiana University, University of Calcutta, and Regis College. He has also lectured before the US Army Strategic Intelligence School on economic Intelligence requirements. Mr. Howerton was Chief Consultant for Scientific Literature at the Bibliographic Center for Research, Denver, Colorado as well as consultant for scientific literature to numerous university, public, and private libraries.
