Charles D. Jackson was born in New York City in 1902. He was graduated from
Princeton University in 1924 and holds an LL.D. from Parsons College. After grad-
uation from Princeton University in 1924, he became head of C.D. Jackson and
Company, importers of building materials and in connection with this work
travelled extensively all over Europe. In 1931 he joined Time Incorporated as
Assistant to the President, becoming General Manager of Life Magazine in 1937.
He became Vice President of Time Incorporated in 1940. After the German suc-
cesses in the summer of 1940, he took leave of absence from Time Inc. to set up
and run the Council for Democracy,` an organization to combat isolationist senti-
ment in the United States and to help prepare America for active participation in
war. He returned to Time Inc. aftera year at this work. In October 1942, he went
to Turkey for the State Department `and the Bureau of Economic Warfare to work
on the problem of the chrome contracts, in an attempt to keep chrome from the
Germans. In April 1943, he went to North Africa to become Deputy Chief of
Psychological Warfare Branch of Allied Force Headquarters, working in North
Africa, Sicily, and Italy. In January 1944, he went to England to help organize
Psychological Warfare Division of `Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary
Force, and to prepare for D-Day and the Western European campaign, as Deputy
Chief of PWD. He went to France early in July 1944; participated in the French
and Belgian campaigns as head of Allied Information Service, the section of PWD
dealing with liberated areas. In July 1945, he returned to the United States to
resume duties as Vice President of Time Incorporated and become Managing
Director of TIME-LIFE International, in which capacity he was responsible for all
Time Inc. publishing and newsgathering activities outside the Continental U.S.
In February 1949, he became Publisher of FORTUNE. In February 1951, he went
on leave from FORTUNE and Time Inc. to become President of the National Com-
mittee for a Free Europe Inc., which conducts psychological warfare in the Eastern
European satellite countries, operates Radio Free Europe, and has as its aim the
combatting of Communism and preservation of hope in the captive countries. In
February 1952, Mr. Jackson returned to Time Inc. at the expiration of his leave,
and resumed his duties as Publisher of FORTUNE. During October of 1952 he was
on leave of absence to head the Eisenhower Headquarters speech-writer group. He
returned in November 1952 to TI NM FORTUNE. On February 16, 1953, he
resigned as Publisher of FORTUNE and went on leave from Time Inc. to become
Special Assistant to President: 1. enhower.
