A number of Washingtonians, however, believe that if Congress establishes any ptiblic-private organi- zation to help carry out cold war activities it must thoroughly investigate who is in charge of dispensing funds. It has now been confirmed,' for example, that Cord Meyer Jr., the founder of the fuzzy-headed and super-liberal United World F,:dcralists, was the CIA man in charge of covertly subsidizing the NSA, youth, labor, business, professional and ch,uitable groups. It was Meyer who was responsible for the fact that taxpayer funds were not only channelird to the left-leaning NSA, but to the National C'nuucil of Churches, Norman Thomas, lefiist revolutionnlres and a host of other liberal groups. Anyone who looked at Meyer's background before he was ap- pointed wot,ld, of course, have realized that he would favor subsidizing such or 'an nations. in 1947 of the U W , which pre aches surrenr:e::ng U.S. sovereignty to the United Na- tions, tv:eyer permitted his organization to be- come a haven for super-liberals. The UWF has boasted of such presidents as Meyer and Alan Cranston, the former Comptroller of Calif- ornia and a founder of the ultra-liberal California Democratic Council (CDC). Some of the key men during the late 1940s art early 1950s when Meyer's influence In the UWF was sill strong: United Auto Workers President Walter P. Reuther and Supreme Court Justice William 0. Dorn;;es. The New York Times reccrnty referred to Meyer, who jumped from the Wor c ?ea.cralists to the CIA 1951, in this fashion: "In the. late 1940's and 950's many liberals who wished to serve their cc sound in the CIA not only a personal haven, the onslaughts cCarthyism, but alp;; ;turn y to bring ,c:ar on the problems a realistir liberal understanding c ,1r rgirlg ,entries.
