Intelligence has told a presi-
dential committee to expect
"further revolutionary develop-
ments" from Soviet natural sci-
nce besides sputnik because the
Soviets are pushing their nat-
ural science program so hard.

Speaking to President Eisen-
hower's Committee on Scien-
tists and Engineers on Ott. 4,
shortly before the Soviet an-
nouncement that day of sput-
nik's launching, Dr. Scoville was
quoted in paraphrased form as
saying:
"There has been publicity
about the Russian earth satel-
lite. They won't announce any-
thing until they have it up there.
It wouldn't surprise us if such
an announcement came at any
time. We must be prepared for
it. They are, capable of. doing
such things."
"There is no question but that
the Soviets are capable of great
accomplishments both in peace-
time and wartime," Dr. Scoville
said. "In view. of. the dynamic
drive of their entire scientific
program, we must ^xpect fur-
ther revolutin;iarc, develop-
ments in addilion to the first
