THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR (SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY)
22 August 1966
Mr. Richard Helms, Director
Central Intelligence Agency
Washington, D. C., 20505
When I accepted John McCone's invitation to
join CIA in early 1962, it was with the under-
standing that I would serve at least three and
not more than four years. I believe that I have
now accomplished all of the major objectives in
creating a technical intelligence component for
the Agency that we had set down at the beginning.
As I indicated to you last week, the Hughes Air-
craft Company has offered me a most attractive
position, and I should like now to exercise the
original option of leaving Government service for
private life. As we agreed, 23 September 1966
will be my last official duty day.
Brief words fail to express my admiration for
CIA and its people. I consider it a distinct
privilege to have been able to serve the national
security of my country in such an organization.
If I can be helpful to CIA in the future, please
do not hesitate to call on me.
Sincerely,
Albert D. Wheelon
