Thank you for your letter of 13 July suggesting that I
speak at the Conference being planned by the Asian Stttdies
Review Committee of Indiana University. I regret that previous
commitments for the 12th and 13th of November make it impossible
for me to address the group on the implications of Asian studies
programs for our national security.
It occurs to me, however, that you may wish to consider
inviting one of my Assistant Directors, Dr. Otto E. Guthe, to
provide some of our views on this challenging subject. One of
Dr. Guthe's responsibilities is the direction of a major part
of the Agency's research on the Far East, with particular
attention to Sino-Soviet Bloc economic activities in that area.
I am sure that his remarks would be of interest to those
participating in the Conference, and I would be pleased to make
him available on either 12 or 13 November if you and the
Committee would so desire.
Let me say again that I sincerely regret that I shall not
be able to join you at that time.
