Leonard, once the party's candidate for governor. Bentley carried the state. Demo- cratic. Senator Patrick J. McNa- mara, without oppsition, polled 32,443 votes in the county. An interesting fact was the size of the Republican vote-perhaps a look-in for November, when the Presidential election will swell the turnout on both sides. The Republican ballot offered few choices, particularly in Oak- land cot}nt Yet the CHOP vote was hid ar behind theturi it of Democrats, who had factional disputes to settle as well as a string of contested nominations. Councilman Zigmund J. ltiiparko of Hazel Park and Farm- ington Realtor Leo P. Meagher tar third and fourth. Broomfield, unopposed, polled 33,628 votes. Kellis, ex-Air Force colonel fho said he once directed spy fligTits over Russia "and who has been extremely crrtical of U.S. intelligence efforts, defense plan- ning, and N fgreign policy, immedi- ately challenged Broomfield to de- bate these issues. "Voters nominated State Senator L. Harvey Lodge and Donald E. Adams, Waterfor dtownship jus- tice of the peace, for the new probate judgeship. Adams, brother of Circuit Judge Clark J. Adams, ran well ahead with 11,112 votes. Lodge won the second nomination with 8,477. Only one other can- didate topped 5,000 votes.
