LOS ANGELES, Aug. 31
John A.
today ,the Governors riot com-
mission, which he heads, would
make. a "thorough, objective
and penetrating study of Los
Angeles's recent Negro strife.
The former Central 'Intelli-
gence gence director said at a news
conference 'the inquiry would
be without political or other
interference and should be in
full swing by the. end of next
-week.
He also announced. the ap-
pointment of four staff, mena-
hers to aid the commission
named by Gov. Edmund G.,
Brown to investigate they
devastating violence.
They include Thomas R.%
Sheridan, former special as
sistant to the United States
Attorney in Los Angeles, as
general -counsel; Harold W.
Horowitz, a. professor at the
University of California at Los
'Angeles who will be deputy
chief counsel and deputy direc-
tor; Samuel Williams, a Negro
lawyer who will be a member
of the legal staff, and T. M.
Lee,- Mr. McCone's executive
assistant for 25 years, commis-
sion secretary.
In another, development re-
sulting. from the rioting, the
count ygrand jury. Indicted
three Negroes today on a mur-
der' charge in the shooting of
Deputy Sheriff Donald E. Lud-
low, .27 years old, at the height
of the rioting. Names , were
Phillip 13. Brooks, 22; Joseph'
Lavine'- 23 and Harold. G.
