MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Retirement Problems
1. I have been encouraged by colleagues on both
sides of the house to place the following on record, and
I do so, although I assume that the problems besetting
those retirees who are trying to resettle in the academic
community have probably come to your attention before.
2. None of the universities in the Washington area
have reacted to my agency resume which was sent to them
this Spring. My colleagues and I ascribe this lack of
reaction to a general reluctance on the part of universi-
ties to hire CIA veterans. Even though I am fortunate in
havin ood prospects of getting an appointment at the
Univorsity,in 1968, I must face up to the possibility of
unpleasant surprises, especially as I know that the acting
head. of the Political Science Department (G.,'J.?) is violently
anti-CIA. A colleague in ONE knows of two recent cases of
agency retirees who were unable to return to the academic
community.
3. As a means to - hopefully - improve the climate,
one of my colleagues suggested that a qualified. DDI retiree
be authorized to write a book on the intelligence production
process, its positive contributions, its non-conspiratorial
nature, etc. 4
