Approved For Release 2009/03/04: CIA-RDP75-00001 R000300570008-5 MR. JOHN E. O'GARA John E . O'Gara was born in 1895 in Hanover, New Hamphsi re. During the first World a e served-as Ensign (T) U.S. Navy aboard the USS Virginia on convoy escort duty. After graduation from Dartmouth (B.S. 1918, M.C.S. 1920), he was employed by a Nashua, New Hampshire, paper company as a production planner. In 1922 he became associated with Macy's, New York, (unit of the R. H. Macy & Company, Inc.) in their Management Methods Department. In 1935, after 13 years of service with that organization, he was appointed General Manager and Vice President. During World War II he served as a colonel in the U. S. Army -- first, in the Army Service Force 11942-441, then, as the Deputy Director of the Office of Strategic Services (1944-45). At the end of the war Mr. O'Gara returned to his work with R. H. Macy & Co., but in October of 1949 he left that organization to accept an appointment with the Department of State as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs.
