The victim, James D. Pem-
roke, 42, of 5110 Worthington
rive in the Westmoreland sec-
ion of Montgomery County,
was taken off the critical list
at Casualty Hospital but is re-
ported still in serious condition. ,
Mr. Pembroke was found un-
conscious early yesterday near
the intersection of Kendall and
Gallaudet streets N.E. He had
numerous Stab - wounds and
had been robbed of $40.
He told police later that he
had been at a cocktail lounge
when he met a colored man
in his early 20s and agreed to
accompany him to meet a
friend.
Mr. Pembroke said the chance
acquaintance attacked him be-
cause he refused to go into the
apartment house in the Ivy
City area of Northeast Wash-
