The personal weakness of Gary Powers Was his lack of conviction on cold war issues. It the CIA was alert it could have spotted this attitude in advance. I cannot share the enthusi- asm of the writer (in the Mailbag) who bases her de- fense of Powers on his "com- plete security check." He did the job for mercenary, rather loan patriotic reasons.
