Plan to Wed ,
Francis Gary Powers, the re-'
cently divorced American U-21
pilot who spent nearly two
years in a Russian prison, ob-1
tamed a license yesterday in'
Arlington to marry a former'
CIA psychologist.
Powers. 34, indicated on the
license that he and Claudia
Edwards Downey, 28, a divor-
cee, would be married today
in Fauquier County, Va., at
Catlett, home of Mrs. Downey's
brother, 0. D. Edwards Jr.
The high-flying spy plane
Powers piloted on a CIA sur-
veillance mission over the So-
viet Union was knocked from
the sky by rocket fire on May
1, 1960. He was tried, sen-
tenced to 10 years, then re-.
turned to the United States
after 21 months in exchange
for Col. Rudolf I. Abel, a con-
victed Russian spy.
Shortly after his retlrrn, he
resigned from the CIA and
,months after that sued his
wife, Barbara, for divorce on
grounds of cruelty and habit-
ual intoxication. She counter-;
sued a n d t h c divorce was
granted Jan. 16, with Mrs.
Powers receiving a $5000 set-
tlement and lawyers' fees.
Mrs. Downey, the former
Claudia Taylor Edwards, is a
native of Leesburg, Va., and
the mother of a 7-year-old
daughter, Claudia Dec. She
resigned last week from the
CIA and left her Arlington',
home at 852 S. Frederick st.'

siren, listed his occupation on
the license as a test pilot for;
Lockheed Aircraft Co. in Bur-I
rk, Calif.
