Approved For Release 1999/09/17: CIA-RDP75-00001 RO 25X1A THE CIA OCTOPUS -- A SECRET SERVICE WITH UNDERWORLD METHODS [Following is the translation of an article by Hans-Joachim Mertens in the German-language periodical Neues Leben (Now Life), Vol X. No 27 (1006), Moscow, 29 June 1966, a publication of Pravda (Truth), reportedly reprinted from Die Wahrheit (Truth , West Berlin, page 13.] It was gruesome -- like a nightmare, one of the parti- cipants said later on. The entire detachment of short and thin, black-haired men in the black shirts and the blue trousers of the FNL [Vietnamese National Liberation Front] National Liberation Army attacked the village in the high- lands of Central Vietnam like a hurricane. They raped the women, they hanged the old men from trees, they mutilated the children and they set fire to the straw roofs of the poor huts. On a piece of paper which they left behind -- and which a short time afterward was found by American sold iers and handed over to the reporters -- this action was termed "an act of revenge of the FNL for the betrayal per- petrated by one of the village inhabitants." This massacre actually was a disgusting and cruel lie. The CIA had figured out this barbaric mission; it had dressed up its own agents as FNL fighters and it had sent them against the village. This was supposed to give American newspaper correspondents more food for their campaign of lies about the alleged atrocities committed by the FNL. The lives of dozens of innocent people were wiped out in order to make this lie sound more plaus ible. Senator Young Spills the Beans One of the men who carried out this mission later on reported about I this massacre because his conscience bothered him. The witness, who is certainly beyond suspicion, released the entire affair to the publics he was Senator Steven Young from Ohio, who learned about this action in Sai. gone 12AUG
