I NGTON, D.C. - ! at e time or
l b
Agency (CIA) reported Tues-
day it was "co-operating ful-
ly" with police in connec-
tion with the theft of $20,-
i u00 in jewels from the home
of Hans V. Tofte, a high-
ranking CIA official.
i y The CIA said Mr. and Mrs.
XXenneth Slocum, CIA em-
11,;j I o y e s, and Charles D.
! Speake, a security represent-
.; ative of CIA, were in the
Tofte home in the period
when it is alleged that the
$20,000 in diamonds and
sapphires were stolen.
Tofte and Mrs. Tofte in
statements to the police have
said they found certain CIA
4 papers, some "manuscripts"
that were Tofte's personal
property and the jewels were
missing "A:etween Saturday
:morning July 23 and Sunday
evening, July 24.
NEITHER Tofte nor Mrs.
~ofte were present when Mr.
land Mrs: Slocum and Speake
were in the home, but Mrs.
Charlotte Leister, mother-in-
law of Tofte, was there with
two poodles.
Mrs. Marlys Tofte, former-
ly of Anoka, said yesterday
the jewels and the official
'CIA papers that T o f t e
brought' to the house for
home work were in a third-
floor library and away from
the area where guests were.
invited.
She said they regarded the
home and Mrs. Leister safe
because the two dogs barked
loudly and angrily if anyone
approached the house or
tried to enter. unless calmed
by the Toftes or b y Mrs.
.eister. .
! - THE CA contends the Slo-
r :ms were looking fo_r a
,house, and did not kr.r
e Saturday visit.
"During the course of the
sit, Slocum noticed by
'ante classified agency ma
:vial in one of the rooms
shown and reported
it promptly to agency se-
c
rity officials," the CIA
id yesterday in explaining
e reason for the return
sit on Sunday.
"Since the presence of ex
1 sed classified documents!
i a private home constitutes'
violation of agency security
gulations, Mr. and Mrs.!
ocum and Speake returned
the residence on Sunday,
ly 24," the CIA stated.
"THEY WERE admitted by
fte's mother-in-law and.
ok custody of the classi-'
d material," the CIA said.
Mrs. Tofte told police the,
assified material was in the
ird-floor room, out of the
ay of normal house traffic,
,d yvas wrapped in such a'
an'oer that it would have
?en necessary for any in-
uder to have unwrapped it
have known what it was.
In addition, she said Mrs
ister did not show the third
or to the Slocums and the
al estate man on Saturday,
d on Sunday had no knowl-
ge that the three CIA em-
oyes had gone to the top'
f or' and had removed the
