William Howard Taft 3d, nominated as the'
new American Ambassador to Ireland .. .
thirty-eight years old, he is the oldest of
the three sons of Sen. Robert A. Taft, and
grandson of the former President whose
name he bears ... was graduated from Yale
in 1937; received a Ph.D. from. Princeton
in 1942 . . . he taught English and Gaelic
culture at Yale, and also taught at Haver-
ford .. during Wprld War II he was a
research;'analyst in thilitary intelligence .. .
afterward, he served for two seat's as deputy
administrator of the Economic Co-opera-
tion Administration in Ireland ... learned
to speak C' ' fluently, and is believed to
be the only American Ambassador to have
mastered that ancient Irish language .
recently he has been with the Central In-
telligence Agency ... he and his wife, the
former Miss Barbara Hoult Bradfield, of
Grand Rapids, Mich., live in New Haven
.. , they have four children.
