CPYRGHT
CPYRGHI-DNOLULU (AP) -IA SPOKESMAN FOR THE, CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE
CENTER GRANTEE JAMS ANTHONYS CHARGE THAT CIA AGENTS MAY BE
AMONG THE FIRST DELEGATION OF PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEERS GOING
TO FIJI LATER THIS YEAR.
ANTHONY,'WHO HAS BEEN IN HAWAII AS A UNIVERSITY OF
HAWAII STUDENT FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS, MADE THE STATEMENT IN
A TALK IN SUVA, FIJI. HE HAS RETURNED TO HIS HOME, BUT IS
EXPECTED TO GO TO AUSTRALIA FOR DOCTORAL STUDIES IN POLITICAL
SCIENCE.
ANTHONY SPOKE TO ABOUT 1,000 PERSONS AT A MEETING IN
FIJI, AND CALLED THE .PEACE CORPS "A FORM OF MODERN PATER-
NALISM." EARLIER THIS YEAR, ANTHONY HAD THREATENED TO TRY
TO AROUSE PUBLIC OPINION AGAINST THE PEACE CORPS WHEN HE
RETURNED TO FIJI.
DR. JOHN STALKER, HEAD OF THE PEACE CORPS TRAINING CENTER
IN HAWAII, SAID ANTHONY'S CHARGE ABOUT THE CIA AGENTS IN THE
PEACE CORPS "A RATHER UNIMPORTANT CHARGE."
STALKER SAID, "I'D BE VERY SURPRISED IF THERE WERE ANY
CIA AGENTS IN THE PEACE CORPS DELEGATION TO FIJI."
HE CALLED STATEMENTS BY ANTHONY "LIKE JOHN BIRCH SCREAMIN
EXCEPT FROM THE OTHER SIDE."
Taken from the HONOLULU STAR BULLETIN - 27 June 1967:
CPYRGHT
CIA Talk Un.impo~r_ ant
Dr. John Stalker, hee.d of Peace Corps training here,
called stater:_an'_-s by James Antho y `like John Birch screaming
except fro t-.e other side. ''
He "ascribed Anthony's claim that the CIA has planted
agents among tha Peace Cort?,s' 70 volunteers in Fiji "a rathe
unimportant charge."
"This is a tired question," said of the accused
infiltration.
"President Kennedy and President Johnson have reiterate
over and over again that the Peace Corps has nothing to do with
any other international agency."
Each of the Peace Corps volunteers goes through normal
Civil Service check to see if he or she is employed by any
other federal agency or cf,rice, Stalker said.
"I'd be very surprised if there were any CIA agents in
the Peace Corps delegation to Fiji," he added.
A spokesman for the CIA in Honolulu said today he had
no coim2n t on Anthony's c'-arge and that he had no knowledge f it.
