Cuba on our hands, but a Cuba ki Wht of our own mang.a would, happen if our Marines withdrew? Does anyone doubt that the military junta would be overthrown in the matter of. a few days? Now we ate there indefinite- ly. How long will our troops remain? One we e k?, Twenty I weeks? A hundred w e e k s? How many of our men will it: take to defend a military re- gime which is hated by its own 1 people? (For details, look at South Vietnam.) The tragedy of the affair is that the Dominican Republic once had its own elected gov- ernment, under Juan Bosch. It is undeniable that Bosch was.. anti-Ca in in u n i s t. That was fine. 'However, he also was in- He wanted his dependent. country to develop its own re- sources, to run its own plants. This idea was unthinkable to the American corporations who had exploited the island f or many years. In classic manger, therefore, the-Q4.4.1, and other American agents, saw to it that Bosch was ex- pelled and a military Junta installed in his place. The military did not solve the problem. It rarely keews how to handle the complexity. of.. civilian problems. At any, rate, civil liberties were sus- pended; living conditions de- teriorated, and the people were., driven to the point where they: wished to have their former ,'elected government restored.; They had ovgrthrown the jun- ta when we intervened.
