WASHINGTON MERRY-GO-ROUND.
(Drew Pearson's column is written today byj
h.is associate, Jack Anderson.)
A Polish security officer, wlio spied foe tl,e--
U. S. for three years, then escaped to the West
when his game became too dangerous, has sud? I
denly started spreading wildly improbable tales on
apitol IIill.
He is Col. MMichal Goleniewski, who was re-
cruited by the Central Intelligence Agency as a
"defector in place" in 1958. He had access as a
olish liaison officer to the secrets of Russia's:
{GB spy agency and was able to smuggle out)
aluable information until he was forced to flee;
n 1961. He has been in constant fear of his life,
nd the strain may have been too much for him.
or example, last summer he described himself
s a Romanoff, a member of the Russian royal
a
mily, although he ' is a Pole. Then he began
laiming g that Communist agents had infiltrated.
he CIA. He spun a yarn about how $1,000,000 in
IA funds had fallen into KGB hands, half of
hick had been pumped back Into the 'U. S. to -
nance Communist operations. -
These stories inevitably reached Capitol 1I111,'
'here they appear to have been accepted at face?
alue by Sen. Thurmond (D-S. C.) and Rep. Fel
han (D-Ohio), who take a conspiratorial view
events. -
They have talked to the defector, who has
i fered no evidence except his own emotional
t stimony. The CIA has tried to persuade Cole
ewski to?visit a psychiatrist, but he has refused
o the ground .that. this may be a plot to silence'
