WASHINGTON-The show-
down battle over how the sen-
ate should ride herd on the
'central intelligence agency
committee for study. It is an-
ticipated he will suggest ei-
ther the armed services com-
mittee, of which he is the
chairman, or the appropria-
tions committee.

After an hour-long closed
mccting, Sen. Richard Rus.
sell, D-Ga., chairman of the
watchdog group, said any
compromise appeared "ex-
trmnely doubtful.
Son, Milton Young, R-N. D.,
a member of the watchdog
body, was even more explicit,
1 think there will be a battle
on it now," he said.
Russell met late Monday
with Fulbright and Sen. Eu-
gene McCarthy, D-Minn., au-
r thor of the resolution that
asked for a new committee,
but a hoped-for compromise
failed to materialize.
After Tuesday's postpone-
ment, 'Russell indicated that
when. the report is filed, lie

Mondale said he will sup-
port the McCarthy proposal
