PYRGHT %JWOUI f d om its coverage o ftn- X 1n9cting Tuesday, Nov. 29, Spec- tator misrepresented several of the decisions made that evening, giv- ing a very unclear picture of their import. I would like to take this \%11\A`r ity com- F u'st. arc st.:tcmcnt that "stu- ,lcnts sl:uuld control the university; and its policies", if not spurious, is at least unrepresentative of the views. and policies of Columbia SDS. Rather, the people of Co-I lumbia SDS believe that far toy; many decisions in the University made without adequate (if :? are any) consultation with students: and faculty and are made with no decisive participation of students or' faculty. The draft issue is one which directly concerns the very { lies of the undergraduates and l gi nduate students. A decision on: draft policy in the University in- volves judgments which can only,: and must be made by the body of people whose lives are to be af- fected by such a decision. The, draft referendum' should be bind- ing because students should. make the decisions which particularly-; concern their own lives. It is re-;' grettable that an anonymous quote should be misleadingly presented' by Spectator' as a basic policy statement of SDS. Secondly, the hearings which are to be conducted by SDS are not, as Spectator would have it, to be concerned with "the alleged exis- tence of a 'secret office"' at Co~ lumbia. The hearings referred to in the proposal adopted by SDS,, -wil 11 i deal primarily with the struc-' tulle of the University and possible alttirnativcs to that structure, they will give students and faculty an -opportunity to consider the facts -of decision-making'and exercise,of -control in the University. Thirdly, the plans "to con uc sit-in" were niven n misleadin VERSITY iEWMeeaat16eA[0149R000600430026-4. I,CL UAU tlR:OV. VS.+w.. .o L.. ........ t, circulate a petition, prepare li?tera ture, hold forums, and operate dorm-canvassing program. W will attempt to make our view and demands known to the Uni versity community and air discus sions on the relevant issues. The only if our demands are- not me will SDS call for public demon strations. SDS would conduct sit-in only if the other modes o voicing demands prove futile in th face of an intransigent Adminis tration. I hope that Spectator's stand I ards of reportage will in the fu ture be above the taking of state ments out of context, irresponsib] quoting, and just ? plain misinfor Steering Cornmlttee,, Sanitized- Approved ForRelease..-.- CIA-RDP75-00149R000600430r026-4
