Named Head
Of NSC Staff
-Bromley K. Smith, a veteran
Government expert in co-ordi-
nating foreign policy and de-
fense matters, was named by
President Kennedy today as
the executive secretary of the
National Security Council.
The action makes Mr. Smith
the head 'of the NSC staff of
which he has been a member
since 1953.
Since James S. Lay resigned
as NSC executive secretary
early in the Kennedy admin-
istration, Mr. Smith has been
acting in that post.
A native of California, Mr.
Smith joined the State Depart-
ment in 1940 after working as
a newspaper reporter in Wash-
the operations co-614inating
board, an arm of the NSC,
from 1958 until President Ken-
nedy abolished the board
earlier this year.
In his new $20,000-a-year
job, Mr. Smith will work di-
rectly with' McGeorge Bundy,
special assfstafit" to the ' Presi-
dent for national security af-
fairs.
He lives with his wife and
