2. Murray Snyder asked if we would invite certain Defense Department
press men to any off-the-record press conference you might have on the U?'2
incident. He thought it would be helpful. He had an idea that you were going
to see some newsmen today off-the-record. I told him we would certainly con-
sider his request and the several newsmen that he named, but that I know of
no group conference scheduled, and that certainly there is none for today, and
I doubted, with the United Nations and other actions going on, that you would
have any such conference on or off the record. He repeated that the press
people in Defense are pretty much in the dark and it might be helpful if we
would give them some guidance if we were giving any other rel3,able4 guidance.
