Grjn-,a l APIDS, PRESS E. 125,014 S. 86,238 etea b 2005/01/05 :CIA-RDP75-0014980007 8009-7 14 Oren. Taylor's. Back in Uniform Just what Gen. Maxwell 17.,Tay- lor's job as military adviser to President. Kennedy will entail probably is a secret between the general and his boss.'Th post is a new one. .Presiden Eisenhower was his own best military adviser. He didn't need anyone? to weigh his military problems. It's presumed that Taylor's first big task will be Ito,examine the Berlin problem.` This supposi- tion apparently, is based' on the fact that Soviet Premierrush- chev has been threat{ezing to des- ignate Berlin as a tI, it,arized city 'all on his own. ' former U. S. commander in Perlis and army chief of st for four years, Taylor is an 'hand at juggling the German Issue. B u t certainly Mr. Kennedy would' not have summoned the general from retirement-if the Berlin problem were all he had in mind.; A good guess would be that the PzkAi eai feels..the need of con vise,, on military ma eers generally and the joint chiefs of staff and Intelli- gerce.,a,cy_ specifically. Two of the three men on the joint chiefs of staff are being re- placed within the next two months. That will leave only Gen. Lyman L. Lemnitzer, the chair- man, whose chances for being con- tinued in that post next year are considered slim by some Washing- ton .observers. Rightly or wrong- ly, Lemnitzer has been vigorously criticized for failure of the Cuban invasion. It inconceivable that one of Taylor's main responsibilities for the next several months will be to act as liaison officer between the President and the Pentagon. Taylor ,ikely will have ,a major role to play in the anticipated re- ,or gariization oe ~, since it wale o-headed the study of that agency after-the Cuban fias- co. It i ay be assumed that ifs, ar- amil? y uerrlla tactics:'. sub- versls ite,) activities are taken aw y f o i 11.T_aylor will have a gr ;t. caj.to, say about where they will go-which could be the joint chiefs, or even a brand-new agency. One thing is certain-Taylor is not returning to official Washing- ton to serve as anyone's window dressing. He's a b out o_ ken soldier who is prone to a e a critlea ao C at everyone around ail move and below him. Approved For Release 2005/01/05 : CIA-RDP75-00149R000700480009-7
