Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor to-
day prepared for his first
assignment as President Ken-
nedy's new- adviser on intelli-
gence and military affairs --
what to do in Berlin.
Mr. Kennedy told the schol-
arly former paratroop com-
mander yesterday to begin
work Saturday. His first
assignment is, to review Unit-
ed States planning in the Ber-
lin crisis.
In announcing Gen. Tay-
lor's appointment, the White
House said he would be a
presidential watchdog in the
intelligence field, and would
not be interposed between Mr.
Kennedy and the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, National Security
Council or the Ce tral Agency.
Gen. Taylor will have no
command authority, press sec-
retary Pierre Salinger said.
