`CZECH SPY SUSPECT
IS SAID TO LEAVE U.S.
Special to The New York Tlmea
UNITED NATIONS, N. Y.,.
Jan. 9-A Czechoslovak staff
member accused of attempted
espionage against the United
States was reported to have
left his United Nations. post
and returned home.
Sources here identified the
staff member as Evgen Vacek
and said he held a minor post
in the Department of Political
and Security Council Affairs.
He was said to have left for
Prague on Saturday.
The espionage case became
known late last month after
the United States had supplied
evidence to Secretary General
Thant.
The suspect told Mr. Thant
that efforts had been made to
recruit him as a spy by the
Central Intelligence Agency.
Qualified sources said, how-
ever, that Mr. Thant had been
given a dossier on Mr. Vacek's-
activities and this was reported
to have shown that he had tried
to get classifeid material from;
members of a research institute
involved in scientific and mili-
tary projects.
Mr. Vacek was not dismissed
but allowed to resign.
Officials of the United States
Mission had no comment on the.
case and apparently 'we will-
ing to see it, closed as Wetly
as possible..
