BOB GNEISER: "The head man of NASA, James Webb, out in
California today, where he told a luncheon meeting that the
Russians did better than expected in-the space efforts last
gear."
JAMES WEBB: "I would say during the last year, the Russians
have shown more progress than we thought they could a year ago.
They flew more than twice as many important space missions last
year, as they did the year before. They have 'flown some very
sophisticated vehicles -- in some ways, in the area of science
just as sophisticated,, or perhaps in some oases moreso, than we
