S. secret service. After quoting an interior ministry communique as confirming an earlier report by the paper that an investigation was under way, tne paper complains that the two officers concerned, Leo Maier and Otto Weidinger, have still not been suspended from duty. The paper says in part: close contact with the U. S. secret service before 1955, when These contacts with members of foreign agents organizations were at that time known to Maier's superiors and not quite unwelcome to them. Last but not least, through these contacts many a valuable piece of information found its way across the demar- cation line from Linz and Salzburg to Vienna. At that time no one at the pro- vincial security police headquarters suspected Maier of doing anything wrong in the course of his work as a member of the state security police. "When with the end of the occupation era the members of the CIC left Austria together with the withdrawal of the U. S. forces, the contact between Maier and'the U. S. secret service seemed interrrupted. Actually, however, super James Bond Maier main- tained contacts with the 2nd U. S. secret service, CIA. This fact probtdbly ex- plains why Maier and later on also his colleague Weidinger several times surprisingly supplied valuable information to Austrian agencies.
