Request for Press Translations Re:
Robert L. Vesco
I talked by telephone today with Mr. Thomson von Stein
of the Division of Enforcement, Securities and Exchange Commission,
in response to his letter of 4 April requesting that SEC be sent brief
summaries of articles in foreign media on Robert L. Vesco. I
explained our inability to comply with his request because of the
statutory restrictions confining the Agency's activities to foreign
intelligence and matters directly related thereto. I pointed out that
we might be exceeding our authority if we responded to specific
requests to assist the Securities and Exchange Commission in actions
involving a U. S. citizen even though that citizen resides abroad ancTATSPEC
much of his present business is conducted abroad. Mr. von Stein
understands our position and will follow m
r. Vesco's activities
translations from time to time in order to meet legitimate CIA
requirements. There is no need to reply to Mr. von Stein by letter.
