Approved For Release 2002106/24. P75B00326R000100050017-2 6 November 1967 MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD SUBJECT: Notes on Collocation of A-12 and SR-71 The following items should be recognized when a discussion ensues regarding the feasibility of collocating the A-12 aircraft with the SR-71 aircraft at Beale Air Force Base. These items are enumberated only to flag the high points and not for detailed discussion. 1. Security a. Present location is both remote and secure, whereas if the aircraft were moved to Beale, it would be exposed to many thousands of now unwitting persons. b. The pilots would be exposed to old friends in the Air Force. c. Families would be exposed to both the Air Force and the A-12 personnel and it would be impossible to control the gossip. d. Many hundreds of civilians would be infused into the normal military atmosphere of an airbase with resultant confusion and discussion of the differences in the projects. e. Deployments would be compromised by the sudden movement of transports and the departure of assigned personnel. f. Persons in our unit would be.immune from SAC alerts and normal Air Force inspections etc. with the resultant discussions. The Bureau o connaissance Study -the decided it would cost to move the A-12 to Beale e. b. The supply lines from the Depot and Burbank would be much longer. c. If the personnel were not moved to Beale with their families, the airlift from Burbank would be astronomical in cost. d. Operations would be disrupted for a minimum of four weeks while the movement was in progress. 3. Facilities a. At present Beale Air Force Base is being used to capacity and the infusion of this project would produce chaos. b. Complete facilities would have to be built for the A-1 s, i.e., ngers, engine- test stands, supply storage, etc. c. There is insufficient housing for Beale at present and civilian housing is at such a great distance from the base that it would not be feasible to use it. d. Lack of these facilities would in all probability deter Lockheed and subcontractor's personnel from moving to Beale. 25X1A 25X1A 25X1A f There is no large, secure, high-altitude test or training area in that portion of the United States. There will be no gain in operational capability b- Const ction costs for the move was forecast at 25X1A c. Five year possible operating savings were nil. 4. It would still be required to have dual facilities such as cotunications, maintenance, supplies, etc. e.
