The medical procedures being currently used to evaluate volunteers for prospective aerospace flight missions represents the culmination of past experiences and new medical knowledge gained over the past ten years. The most detailed and exacting yet devised and practised for the specific purpose at hand, it enables the CM0 to qualify the candidates on the following criteria: 1. No medical defect or latent predisposing abnormal conditions exist which could render the candidate unfit or endanger his health and/pr life during proposed operational activities. 2. The response of the vital physiological systems, e.g. heart, lungs, neuromuscular, etc., to simulated stress factors has been found well within normal and desired limits. 3. There is no evidence of mental illness, past or present, nor indication of predisposing factors for such in the foreseeable future. 4, Psychological assessment indicates strong, sound motivational structure to support a high degree of personal performance and achievement in carrying out the flying requirements of both training and operational. phases. 5. No positive statement can be made at this time regarding the candidates' ability to withstand hazardous or threatening situations which are not: directly related to or.extrapable from his past military flying experiences. g. Duplicate medical processing of the volunteer subjects was carried out at the AF School of Aerospace Medicine, Brooks AFB, Texas and the Lovelace ,,gF,~oundation for Medical Research, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
