Honorable Joel T. Broyhill
House of Representatives
Washington, D. C. 20515
Dear Joe:
Some of the boys In our Senior Seminar just stopped by my office
to tell me how they had enjoyed your visit with them this morning. It
was good of you to step up to the plate and bang out such interesting and
sensible comments on the political scene on such short notice. I apologize
for not tipping you off in advance that you might be called on, but In fact,
I didn't realize that we would stumble into the Seminar in session or that
they hoped to call on you for a few remarks. But when Hugh Cunningham
raised the possibility just before we walked into your office, I told him
I thought you'd be a good soldier and wouldn't mind giving the boys and
girls a few off-the-cuff comments about the facts of life the Hill.
Regarding your observations about how little many members of
Congress know about the Agency, let me say that in our business we can't
afford to encourage too much Inquiry, discussion, and publicity, but on a
selective basis we are anxious to keep the more responsible members
informed to the extent that they are interested. With this in mind, I'd be
particularly glad if you could spare the time some day to come out for a
breakfast or a lunch (after all you live just a few minutes from our
Headquarters building). We'd be delighted to sit down with you informally
and tell you something about our organisation, our mission. and how we
are trying to do our job. If you like we'd also be more than happy to
include Homer Krout. Whenever you think you can work a visit into your
schedule, just give me a ring.
