SUBJECT: Conversation with Ed Braswell, Chief Counsel, Senate
Armed Services Committee, re DCI Retirement
1. In a conversation today Braswell said he understood
Mr. Schlesinger was going to Mississippi to formally tell Senator
Stennis of his prospective appointment as DCI. He also commented
that Secretary Richardson had just gone to Mississippi for the same
purpose. He remarked that it had been originally planned that the
President would call Senator Stennis regarding the Schlesinger appoint-
ment but after an initial feeler by Torn Korologo.s, of the White House
staff, it appeared that Senator Stennis was far from enthusiastic about
the change and it was decided to send Schlesinger down to personally
sell himself to Stennis.
2. Braswell said that Stennis would not be at all enthusiastic
about Schlesinger's appointment but on the principle of the President's
right to pick his own team he would not try to block it.
