Talked to Wayne Birdsall, of the reporting firm of Ward & Paul, and arranged for security control of the stenographic record and transcript of the briefing before the Muskie Subcommittee Friday, 18 May 1973. Office of Security has beenadvised. 6. I I Met with Ralph Preston, House Appropriations Committee, and Brie e zxm on the current assessment of problems involved in the possible utilization and release of an intelligence study by the Executive Branch. Preston asked that he be kept up-to-date on this matter. I also briefed Preston on the Adams case and gave him copies of the various affidavits furnished the Armed Services Committee in connection with their review of the Ellsberg affair and attempted coverup of the Watergate. Preston raised the question of possible violation of the prohibition against the internal security, police, and subpoena powers. I told Preston that we have developed a very short one-page comment on this question and that I would forward it to him during the day tomorrow. 7. Met with William Hogan, House Armed Services Committee staff, and picked up from him copies of the transcript of the Agency hearings for 16 May. Copies will be distributed to interested Agency components for comment and correction, Met briefly with staff personnel of Subcommittee No. House Judiciary Committee, who told me that Jim Cline, Subcommittee Counsel, as well as Chairman Eilberg, of the Subcommittee, and Chairman Rodino, of the full Committee, will be travelling outside, of the country leaving later in the day. Action on private bills of interest to the Agency will be held in abeyance until return of the Committee chairmen and Mr. Cline. 9. Talked to Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel, House Armed Services Committee, and briefed him on the Adams case. Later in the day I called Slatinshek; Chairman Nedzi, Intelligence Subcommittee; Ralph Preston, House Appropriations Committee staff; and Dick Moose, Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff; and told them about Adams' resignation from the Agency.
