6. I I Met with Peter Abbruzzese, Administrative
Assistant to Representative Wayne Hays (D. , Ohio), and ave him a copy
of our turndown letter in the employment application of Alexandria,
Virginia. Abbruzzese indicated that he could well understand the Agency' s
hiring situation at the present time and told me he would report to Hays that
7. 1 I Met briefly with Bernice Kalinowski,
Personal Secretary to Frank Slatinshek, House Armed Services Committee
staff, and left with her a Congressional Quarterly biographic sketch on an
individual Slatinshek had inquired about. Miss Kalinowski. told me that
Chairman Hebert is still in the hospital from the flu but that he is progressing
satisfactorily.
Committee staff, and briefed him on the Director's meeting with Senator
McClellan (D. , Ark.). It is Preston's opinion that Chairman Mahon will be
pleased that the meeting.was a satisfactory one. I told him that the Director
will be briefing Senate Appropriations Committee next Wednesday, 31 January.
9. I Met with Art Kuhl, Chief Clerk, Senate
Foreign Relations Committee, who told me that by the present Committee
plans, Helms' confirmation hearing may be scheduled for next Wednesday,
31 January. In brief, he mentioned also that in the Committee administrative
budget approved in the Committee organization meeting this week, something
over one-third is for the Multinational Corporation Subcommittee expenses.
11. I I Met with Bruce Merkle, Administrative
Assistant to Representative William Bray (R. , Ind. ), who told me that Bray
intends a very active role as senior Republican on House Armed Services
Committee. This role will not involve any additions to staff, however.
