Approved For Release 2005/04/21 : CIA-RDP75B00380R000100060132-3 .C a L 1,L Journal ?. Office of Legislative ounsel 'Wednesday - 16 May 1973 9. I I Received a call from Page 3 General Counsel, NSA, which was relayed to Lawrence Houston, OGC, concerning certain sensitive documents under review in the General Counsel's office at Department of Defense. 10. I I Met with Chairman Nedzi, Intelligence Subcommittee, House Armed Services Committee, and briefed him on the meeting with Senator Symington arranged by DOD representatives to review certain sensitive documents now in the possession of the Ervin Committee of the Senate. With regard to this morning's briefing, Chairman Nedzi told me that he felt that the overall presentations by the Agency witnesses were "very creditable statements. " He noted that he only has one substantive question for Mr. Helms and that he really expects that Mr. Helms' appearance tomorrow will be able to satisfy that question. He told me that the Committee had conferred with the McClellan Committee during the hearings this morning and had advised the Senate group that he would release General Walters' affidavit to put a stop to the erroneous press reports that have been circulating. He said he released General 'Walters' affidavit immediately after the hearing. 11. Met with Representative William Bray (R. , Ind.) who told me that he had been forced to leave the morning hearing due to a very compelling engagement and expressed his apologies for not having been there for the entire session. I briefed him on events after his departure. He feels that the Agencyl have become a most important area for review by the Committee as soon as Chairman Nedzi can schedule it. His present feeling is that at least limited legislation may be required for the Agency's benefit in this area. 12. Talked to Guy McConnell, Senate Appropriations Committee staff, who told me that the UPI report of alleged statements by Chairman McClellan after this morning's session with Mr. Helms was grossly in error. He told me that the Chairman was then in process of finalizing a Committee press release. He told me that in his opinion this morning's session with Mr. Helms had gone very well. He noted that the Chairman is a most careful and thorough investigator and is developing a fairly detailed record in this matter. In his opinion Mr. Helms acquitted himself very well before the Committee. 25X1A 25X1 j'y~?~ WdAkB0038OR0001 -~ CRC, 3/18/ 2003 LRT Approved For Release 2 / 00060132-3
