Called Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel,
house Armed Services Committee, or further clarification of what Chairman
Nedzi, Intelligence Subcommittee, may want covered when the Director
appears before his Subcommittee on Thursday, 10 May. Slatinshek said the
appearance, which would be only from 9:00 a, m. to 10:00 a. m, , would deal
primarily with General Cushman's role in the Ellsberg matter and the various
allegations in this connection, but we should also be prepared to report on
other Agency activities which might be of questionable legality or which
might create political controversy.
8, I I Called Senator Stuart Symington to
fill him in on the situation regarding he Ellsberg case. He said that one
senator had said that hearings should be held on the matter, and I told
Symington we were appearing before McClellan's Appropriations Subcom-
mittee on Wednesday and Nedzi's House Armed Services Subcommittee on
Thursday. I tried to clarify with Symington the full facts regarding the Agency
assistance provided the White House in connection with the Ellsberg matter
but Symington, who was obviously rushed, simply thanked me and asked me to
keep him informed in the future.
