JOURNAL
OFFICE OF LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL
Wednesday - 3 January 1973
1. John Goldsmith, Senate Armed Services
Committee staff, called to say he was putting together a file for Mr. Schlesinger's
confirmation hearing and in the process was reviewing some of the material
we had given him on the 5 November 1971 "reorganization. " He has the White
House press release and asked if there were any directives or other communica-
tions on this subject that would be useful to them in preparing their material.
In this connection. he pointed out it is quite possible that there will be some
hostile questions during the confirmation hearing.
Goldsmith also asked if anything was available on what Mr. Schlesinger
had recommended with respect to the intelligence community when he was
Assistant Director of the Bureau of the Budget. (Goldsmith emphasized that
he was not requesting any executive communications nor did he want to
request anything that might involve executive privilege. He merely wants
to have available for the Chairman, and presumably the Committee staff,
whatever information is available on the subject.) I told him I would look
into these two items and be back in touch with him.
2. I (Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel, House
firmed Services ommi elled and said he would like to have someone
come up and talk to him about the bombing of Haiphong and Hanoi. He also
said he would like any information that we have intercepted that would
indicate enemy intentions in the event a cease-fire went into effect. He said
he would like to get together with us no later than Friday. I will take this
up with General Walters and Mr. Carver.
