GLC) Talked further with Herb Roback, Staff Director, House Government Operations Committee, about our contacts with Bill Jones and William Copenhaver, of the Committee staff. Roback said he had talked with Chairman Holifield, who feels it is difficult to ask Subcommittee chairmen not to pursue matters within their jurisdiction. Roback added that we should try to be responsive to Jones' and Copenhaver's requests even though they were matters principally under the jurisdiction of the House Armed Services ommi teP. He pointed out people are getting extremely sensitive about "disposal procedures. " I told him that on the basis of what he had said and further reflection on our part, I thought we would provide the requested information and suggest that if the Subcommittee staff members had any further questions they might want to consult Chairman Lucien Nedzi, Intelligence Subcommittee, House Armed Services Committee, or Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel, who have followed this matter quite closely. 10. I I- GLC) Called Bill Jones, House Government Operations Committee staff, and told him that John Warner was pulling together the material he had requested but things had been rather hectic the past few days and asked if he could give us until Wednesday to get this to him. He said that he thought this would be acceptable especially if the settlement date on this negotiation has been extended as John Warner had said it might be. After checking with Warner, I told Jones that although the effective settlement date was 30 December, we had agreed to extend settlement until the 3rd or 4th of January 1974. 11. GLC) Mr. Colby, accompanied by Jack Maury, met with Senator Stuart Symington and briefed him on the status of our contacts with Senator Howard Baker. Symington advised against our raising any questions with Baker at this juncture but implied that he might talk with, Baker if a suitable opportunity arises. Mr. Colby also mentioned the u sale to Symington. 12. GLC) Jack Maury met with Ed Kenney, Senator Strom Thurmond's Minority Counsel on the Senate Armed Services Committee, and briefed him on the status of our contacts with Senator Howard Baker. Kenney was interested in this and Maury gave him a copy of Helms' statement of denial of any knowledge or approval of given by as recently indicated in the press from leaks of testimony allegedly 25X1 25X1A 25X*Aproved For Release. 2003,409/30 : CIA-RDP75B0038OR000100090007-9 `, yw CRC, 8/5/2003
