OFFICE OF LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL
Friday - 23 November 1973
1. (Confidential - JMM) Informed Guy McConnell, Senate
Appropriations Committee staff, of continued dangerous tensions in the
Middle East.
2. (Confidential - JGO) Met with G. W. Ashworth, Senate Foreign
Relations Committee staff, and received from him the draft itinerary dated
21 November of the Near East survey trip by Seth Tillman, of the Committee
staff, and Ashworth together with a letter from Chairman Fulbright requesting
the same coordination with our field stations as members of his staff have
enjoyed in the past.
I briefed Ashworth in general terms on the present military situation
in the Middle East and requested that he not attempt to meet separately with
Agency representatives I told him the work load on all our
people in the area at this time is extremely heavy and it would be appreciated
that requests be made through the Ambassador for any special meetings
desired. He told me they would try not to be a burden and would limit requests
to those determined essential and agreeable to the Ambassador.
WH Division, has been advised.
3. (Confidential - JGO) Talked briefly with Ralph Preston, Chief
Counsel, .douse Armed Services Cnmmiff.e , who is in the process of proofing
the Defense appropriations bill and tentatively scheduled the meeting requested
by him with Finance, for early in the week of 3 December.
Copies of the Defense bill and report will not be available before Monday when
the Committee hopes to take the bill to the floor.
Also delivered to Preston a breakdown of the disciplines covered in
Agency external training. This was by way of followup to the five-year study
on Agency external training delivered to Preston last week.
