Approved For Release 2003/4 f1 A.-,RDP75B00380R000100110053-5 Journal -, Office of Legislative Counsel Page 2 Monday - 5 November 1973 25X1 3. II- GLC) Hand-carried to Senator Stuart Symington, Acting Chairman, Senate Armed Services Committee, Mr. Colby's letter of today's date transmitting Dick Helms' response to recent allegations in the press and elsewhere concerning his memorandum of 28 June 1972 to General Walters on the subject of the Watergate affair. Senator Symington was very upset over the fact that we were providing identical information to Chairman Nedzi, Special Subcommittee on Intelligence, House Armed Services Committee. He called in Jim Woolsey, General Counsel for the Committee, and discussed the matter at some length. The Senator's tentative conclusion toward the close of the day was to release to the press only the Helms memorandum of 25X1A 28 June 1972 with the names of Shackley and deleted. (Details are covered in my Memorandum for the Record note above. ) 25X1 4.1 1 JGO) Met with Chairman Lucien Nedzi, Special Sub- committee on Intelligence, House Armed Services Committee, and delivered to him the Director's letter concerning Ambassador Helms' response to inquiries by Nedzi and Acting Chairman Stuart Symington, Senate Armed Services Committee, relating to the 28 June 1972 memorandum. It was Nedzi's feeling after reading the letter and Helms' response that the content confirmed his own feelings about the 28 June memorandum. He indicated it would probably be best to let the matter die as is. However, this position could well be conditioned by whatever pressure Symington feels he has for release of the materials. Nedzi indicated he would be willing to join Symington in a release if such seemed indicated. He intends for the present, however, to do nothing further. I also discussed with him his scheduled meeting with the Senior Seminar at Headquarters on Wednesday, 14 November from 9 to 10:30 a. m. He intends to address the group for 20 minutes or so and go into open discussion with them. Per his earlier request to Maury I gave Nedzi a copy of the 30 October article by Patrick Sloyan entitled "Cox's Evidence Indicates Helms Lied in Coverup. " Approved For Release 2003/09/30 : CIA-RDP75B00380R000100110054t.C, 8/5/2003
