afternoon from Senator Symington, Acting Chairman, Senate Armed
Services Committee, who said he was being harassed by the press
regarding the above mentioned 28 June 1972 memorandum from Helms
to General Walters and would like to speak up in Helms' defense but
before doing so wanted Helms' explanation of why he had written the
memorandum as he did. I agreed to send a cable to Helms raising this
question with him.
